Ministry of Justice drops 'Dear Sir' from letters

"Dear Sir" has been dropped by the Ministry of Justice's automated response to legal aid claimants, following a complaint from a female correspondent who argued, “Historically, women would never receive official correspondence, so it made sense to use a generic male salutation. These days women outnumber men." All correspondence sent out by the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) will now begin “To whom it may concern.”

As longtime advocates of abolishing this outdated and exclusionary practice, we at McAllister Olivarius are pleased to see the Ministry of Justice taking action to change and hope to see other agencies and organisations make similar decisions.
