Science spoke with Dr Olivarius about the investigative report that prompted the firing of evolutionary geneticist Francisco Ayala from the University of California (UC) Irvine. The report describes a long-standing pattern of behavior by Ayala, including unsolicited comments on women's physical appearances and unwanted physical contact, which continued even after he was warned to stop in 2015.
Dr Olivarius told Science, "Unlike many harassers who have sex with students or pressure them directly for sex, Ayala did not cross those boundaries. But he clearly made multiple women feel degraded. … Senior university officials warned him to stop acting in these ways, but he continued."
